What Is a Building Display?
A building display is generally a display module integrated into equipment and information systems used in buildings. It can be used to show floors, equipment status, notifications, navigation information, control interfaces, and other interactive content.
Building displays can be found in residential buildings, office buildings, hotels, shopping malls, hospitals, parking facilities, and other public or commercial spaces.
Based on how they are used, they can generally be divided into two categories.
The first category is information display equipment.
Examples include elevator floor displays, parking space displays, digital signage, and building wayfinding terminals. These devices mainly provide users with status, location, or public information.
The second category is interactive control equipment.

There is no single standard form of building display.
Some screens only need to show a few numbers. Others need to run a complete graphical interface, while some products need to display information and allow users to operate the device through touch.

Elevators: From Floor Numbers to Interactive Information
Elevator displays are one of the easiest applications to understand.

Large buildings use many different types of information display equipment.
Hotels may use screens to show events and services. Office buildings can display visitor, company, or meeting information. Shopping malls can use digital terminals for floor navigation and promotional content.
Viewing conditions can also vary. One person may stand directly in front of the screen, another may approach from the side, while someone else may look at it from several meters away.
For this kind of building display, it is more useful to consider viewing angle, resolution, and viewing distance together instead of focusing only on brightness.
IPS panels are often suitable for public-area displays because they can provide a wide viewing angle, allowing users to see the main content without standing directly in front of the screen.
Building Wayfinding: Maps, Text, and Touch Need to Work Together
In hospitals, shopping malls, exhibition centers, and other large buildings, one of the first questions visitors have is often: “Where am I?”
Traditional signs can provide fixed directions, but electronic wayfinding systems offer more flexibility when building layouts change or when there are many departments, stores, meeting rooms, or facilities to display.
Users can search for a destination, and the terminal can provide a route based on their current location.
This places several requirements on the building display. Roads, text, icons, and other map elements need to remain clear. Touch areas also need to be large enough for comfortable operation.
For these terminals, resolution and screen size are often more important than simply increasing brightness.
Parking Facilities: Underground and Outdoor Entrances Are Different Environments
Parking displays may look simple, but their requirements can vary considerably depending on where they are installed.
In an underground parking garage, lighting is relatively stable. Displays may mainly show parking zones, space numbers, driving directions, or other information.
At an outdoor parking entrance, however, the screen may face direct sunlight. A standard LCD with around 300 cd/m² brightness may not provide enough contrast in strong daylight.
If the equipment is installed in a semi-outdoor environment, operating temperature should also be checked.
For example, a display rated for -20°C to +70°C can cover a different range of installation environments than one designed to operate only from 0°C to +50°C.
The right building display for a parking system therefore depends on its actual installation location rather than simply whether the screen is 7 inches or 10.1 inches.
Security and Fire Control Terminals: Information Density Affects Resolution
Building management centers often need to monitor several types of equipment at the same time.
Camera feeds, access control status, alarm information, and fire protection system status may all appear within one interface. The smaller the screen, the less information can be presented at once.
If the interface only needs to show simple statuses such as “Normal,” “Fault,” or “Alarm,” a lower-resolution display may be sufficient.

If all of this information is presented as plain text, it can be difficult for facility managers to understand the current condition of the building at a glance.
Energy management terminals often use charts, graphs, numerical cards, and other visual elements to make the data easier to understand.
The building display becomes the final visual layer of this data system. A higher-resolution LCD can be useful when the interface needs to present detailed charts and multiple data fields.

Meeting Room Reservation Terminals: Small Screens Can Still Display a Lot
Meeting room reservation screens are another common example of a compact building display.

What Parameters Should You Consider When Selecting a Building Display?
Once the application is clear, choosing the right display becomes much easier.
There is no universal specification that works for every building display. The selection process should be based on the actual equipment and installation environment.
Size: Start With the Installation Space
5-inch, 7-inch, 8-inch, and 10.1-inch displays are commonly used in embedded equipment.
If the device only needs to show access status or meeting room information, a small display may be enough.
When the interface needs to show maps, multiple control options, or more detailed data, a larger display area can make operation easier.
The final screen size should still match the enclosure, mounting holes, front panel, and available installation space.
Resolution: Higher Is Not Always Better
Resolution should be selected according to the UI content.
A 1024 × 600 display has approximately 610,000 pixels and can meet the requirements of many basic control interfaces.
A 1280 × 800 display provides around 1.02 million pixels and is more suitable for interfaces with more text and graphics.
A 1920 × 1200 display has approximately 2.3 million pixels and can be useful for information-dense interfaces.
However, a high-resolution building display does not automatically improve the product. If the processor and software system only support a lower resolution, there may be little practical benefit in selecting a higher-resolution panel.
Processor capability, UI design, system compatibility, and cost should all be considered.
Brightness: The Installation Environment Matters More Than the Number
Brightness is generally measured in cd/m².
Office, meeting room, and other indoor environments may only require a medium-brightness display. A 1000 cd/m² panel is not necessary for every indoor application.
Near glass curtain walls, building entrances, or semi-outdoor areas, ambient light can become much stronger. In these situations, high brightness becomes more important.

In some projects, the final decision is not determined by the display itself.
If the mainboard only supports LVDS, a MIPI panel with otherwise suitable specifications cannot simply be substituted. If the available installation space is only around 3 mm, a 5 mm-thick module may also be impossible to install.
For a building display project, it is usually more efficient to define the installation dimensions, mainboard interface, display content, and operating environment first, and then shortlist suitable LCD modules.
