Description

High-Stability Display 128×64 Dot-Matrix LCD Module

Product Overview and Core Highlights

HTG12864-53B-31W is a graphic dot-matrix LCD module (LCM) with a resolution of 128×64 pixels. Adopting COG technology, it integrates the core controller onto the glass substrate, significantly reducing the module’s size and weight while enhancing vibration resistance.

display 128×64 Core Highlights

  • Ultra-High Contrast and Visibility: Equipped with FSTN (monochrome full-view) positive display and transflective liquid crystal. The screen content remains clearly visible both under strong outdoor sunlight (using ambient reflected light) and in dark indoor environments (with LED backlight on).
  • Ideal Industrial Viewing Angle: Features an optimal viewing angle at the 6 o’clock position, matching the typical upward or horizontal viewing habits of most instruments and meters.
  • Powerful and Stable Core: Built with the industry-renowned high-stability ST7565R control/driver IC, which integrates a boost circuit and bias voltage generator, greatly simplifying external hardware circuit design.
  • Wide Operating Temperature Range: Operates stably from -20°C to +70°C and can be stored from -30°C to +80°C, perfectly adapting to harsh industrial and outdoor environments.
  • Flexible High-Density Interface: Uses a 20-pin FPC flexible printed circuit board with a 1.0mm pitch, boasting a compact form factor and facilitating internal wiring in space-constrained devices.

Mechanical Dimensions and Physical Structure

The display 128×64 module features a compact and precise physical size, which supports efficient structural design and CAD modeling.

20-Pin Definitions

The display 128×64 module connects to the main control board (such as MCU, DSP, ARM or Arduino) via 20 pins, with detailed pin function definitions as follows.

Interface Modes and Wiring Instructions

Thanks to the strong versatility of the ST7565R driver chip, the display 128×64 module supports multiple communication interfaces, allowing engineers to switch freely based on the MCU’s pin resources.

SPI Serial Interface Mode (Most Recommended, Saves Pins)

Hardware Setting: Set Pin 18 (P/S) to low level.

Wiring Method:

Connect the MCU’s SPI clock line (CLK) to Pin 15 (SCL).

Connect the MCU’s SPI data output line (MOSI) to Pin 16 (SI).

Pin 6 (RS) serves as the data/command control line.

Connect Pin 5 (/CS1) to the MCU’s chip select pin and Pin 4 (/RES) to the MCU’s reset pin.

Pins 7, 8 and 9~14 can be left unconnected.

8080 Series 8-Bit Parallel Interface Mode (High Refresh Rate)

Hardware Setting: Set Pin 18 (P/S) to high level and Pin 17 (C86) to low level.

Wiring Method:

Connect Pins 9 to 16 (DB0~DB7) to the MCU’s 8-bit data bus.

Connect Pin 7 (/WR) to the MCU’s write signal pin and Pin 8 (/RD) to the MCU’s read signal pin.

Connect RS, /CS1 and /RES to the corresponding MCU control pins normally.

6800 Series 8-Bit Parallel Interface Mode

Hardware Setting: Set Pin 18 (P/S) to high level and Pin 17 (C86) to high level.

Wiring Method: Pin 7 functions as the R/W read/write selection line and Pin 8 functions as the E enable signal line, while the wiring of data lines and control lines remains the same as above.

display 128×64 FAQ and Troubleshooting

Q1: Can a 3.3V MCU directly drive this display 128×64 with a 5V backlight?

A1: Absolutely yes. The logic part (VDD) of the module operates at 3.3V, so its signal lines (data bus, clock, chip select, etc.) are fully compatible with 3.3V MCUs (such as STM32 and ESP32) without level shifting. The 5.0V backlight (BLA) is an independent power supply circuit, which can be directly connected to the 5V power supply in the system without affecting the 3.3V main control logic.

Q2: What is FSTN transflective liquid crystal? What are its practical benefits?

A2: Transflective liquid crystal means the LCD can use both the transmitted light from the backlight and the reflected light from the ambient environment.

Under strong outdoor light, ordinary transmissive screens become invisible due to insufficient backlight brightness. However, this FSTN screen reflects sunlight, becoming clearer under stronger sunlight. The backlight can be completely turned off at this time, greatly saving battery power.

At night or in dark environments, turning on the white LED backlight switches the screen to the standard transmission mode, delivering sharp and clear text.
